Notes from 08/20/2020 - What Have We Gotten Into

Overnight at House Hothemer, the party stayed at the guest house. After breakfast the party decided to go to the Yawning Portal to possibly meet Yessef. The party traveled with Eclipse trailing in mangy dog form. A cloaked figure, as usual, trailed the party. Eclipse got a good look and thought it a kenku. (Note: Kelvit had a kenku associate.)

Fuma used shadow to slip behind the kenku and grab him. The kenku explained his presence as ‘I follow where feet lead’. Amiroth cast detect thoughts. Mercy frisked him and found a dagger, short sword, and coin purse, but didn’t remove any of those. “Bird In Hand” offered to fly away fast. Sedon projected admonishing thoughts which caused some squawking.

When Sedon probed about whose operation this was, he was repeatedly told, ‘Nice try, try again’ until Fuma thought to try the Zentarum. He was told, ‘We have a winner. Fly away now.’ The party let him go.

As the party approached the Yawning Portal they found many diseased, scruffy people. One tried to grab Sedon, who backed up to avoid contact. So Scruffy told him, ‘You know of master. I see within your eyes you sense the master’s arrival. The one who feeds. You feel the Hunger don’t you?’ A watchman hit the beggar with a club to chase him off. Mercy asked whether this meant Sedon could sense the Green Lady, but Sedon denied any such ability.

On reaching the Yawning Portal, a hefty male waved the party to come in. Yessef was immediately spotted on the second floor. However, a well-dressed woman, in fine dark green and black, showed marked interest from the third floor. Eclipse, now in cat form, scooted up to the lady’s table, Amaroth and Mercy giving chase. Mercy offered an apology for the cat getting out of hand, but the lady didn’t care. She introduced herself as Vareen and said to Mercy, “Signs of the Mistress of Shadows should be stronger upon you” as a way of introduction. She then noted that the party’s progress had been sporatic. She mentioned Shar was concerned at both the haste and the lack of progress. She continued, “The more you change, the less she knows. The Lady of the Night wishes for you to resolve this issue as soon as possible. The longer we wait, the less certain the future. We are looking to strengthen our hand. What the lady has foretold - in the spring Waterdeep will fall to armies of orcs, hobgoblins, zentarum. The Flaming Fist is unable to respond due to problems in south. But tremors within this truth already exist. If SHE gets back to this tower then disaster occurs. And there may be more than one path to this disaster.”

Amaroth and Mercy offered some apologies, but Eclipse meowed a number of questions for Mercy to relay. When asking for a way to contact Vareen, Vareen handed a dagger to Mercy and told her it contained a shadow demon, Orek. The party may call upon him to reach her when needed. Vareen also warned the party that the Lady of Night was not well thought of. That allied forces might attempt to stop the party if they believed she’s involved.

After thanking Vareen, Amaroth and Eclipse made their way to Yessef, and Mercy returned to the first floor where Sedon and Fuma were still waiting.

Once all were on the second floor, Yessef took out a crystal and placed it on table to protect the conversation. Sedon felt his talents blocked. Yessef told the party once more to locate Astra. She also said, “Word this morning: it appears forces have already moved on Dagger Forge” (overseen by Flaming Fist, a mercenary group of peacekeepers based out of Baldur’s Gate). “If overrun, there is no fortification between Baldur’s Gate and Waterdeep. The Sorceress behind the orc chieftain is the goal.” She implied that the chieftain had two advisors – a woman green of skin, and a knight in green armor who serves the sorcerer. Mercy asked how the party would recognize Astra, and Yessef provided a description, but several party members had met her previously so this shouldn’t be an issue.

Dagger Forge is 5-7 days south on foot. Sedon suggested renting horses. Yessef agreed to arrange horses for the party. When asked about the Zentarum, she said they have widespread operations in Waterdeep, but won’t move openly against us. The Zentarum have multiple citadels and are willing to work with anyone who accepts Bane. They would have spies on the road south, and the party should not expect much support. The horses will be at the Sullen Mule an hour before dawn. The party will leave at first light.

Yessef also told the party to use the coin at contact agents of Harpers. Two coins together should give off a light and dim. We can use the coin to tell friend from foe.

Back at the House Hothemer, the party told the Lady Hothemer about being called south. She said she would arrange for fresh horses for the party at both South Glen and Hapstone.

Overnight Sedon mumbled something about not being sure what he’s gotten into.
