Notes from 11/19/20 - The Priestess and the Half-Orc

Postby MercyDrake » Mon Nov 23, 2020 5:24 pm

Amaroth (“Polo”) cast invisibilty, Sedon (“Marco”) cast fly, and with Eclipse is Amaroth’s pocket they all trundled off to Daggerford. They landed in the central courtyard of a four-sided building. In the courtyard were a well and some trees, plus a single acolyte attending/pruning the gardens. Four open doors were seen N/E/W/S with footsteps echoing N and W. The party went to the North, and saw another priest in hall.

They messaged each other to appear and talk to him, but decided not to Sedon failed at being stealthy, but the priest did not react, continuing to read instead. The party headed down the North hall. At the end of the hall, watching the street traffic out the West door, was another priest, this one a Zentarum openly carrying the symbol of Bane. The party went back to garden and look out E door. They saw a door to the north and opened that door. Inside were shelves of jars with seeds and seedlings. And two priests watering them.

The other door in the North corridor was barn doors with a bar across them. Turning into the East corridor, they risked opening a door in the east wall door in full view of the Zentarum. He looked over, but didn’t react.

They found a parallel hallway with a mass dormitory. The second doorway was of more interest as it held a single bed with a priest in prayer. She rose and looked at the open door. Amaroth apologized.

She gave no shout, just looking at the party in surprise. Amaroth said, “We are not seeking treasure or seed stocks. We’re seeking allies or similarly dissatisfied people. We are seeking the priest of wheat, but we don’t know if you are she.” Still no alarm raised. Sedon finally introduced himself. The priestess’ name is Watermaster Malka, Priestess of Shontea.

Sedon explained the divination that led him to the priestess of wheat.

Malka responded by saying that liberating Daggerford would be complicated. The Lady Morwen, Duchess of Daggerford hadn’t invited the forces here. Sedon explained that he was scrying Sirse and what had happened. Malka asked what it was the party planned to do? We don’t know.
Malka went on to note that the armies have reduced the crop yields. The populace can’t be fed.

The party noted that she was familiar with the city. They asked whether she could help with layout of the citadel. Malka made the following observations:
- There is a jail and the prison beneath the ducal palace.
- The Zentarum patrol the city.
- The hobgoblins do not come into city.
- The Zentarum are based in the Daggerford Inn.
- The Temple to Lathander (The Morning Lord) has been converted into a temple of Bane.
- The Zentarum have a number of eyes at key points of the city. (Like the priest at the West door)
- The Duchess has dissolved the city council, this may not have been of her own volition
- Wheat priests have had no access to palace for a while now.
- She recommended the Dragonback Inn for the party to take residence. Less closely watched.

Malka left and returned with cloaks to hide that the party is heavily armored. Sedon then asked about the “fallen lady” and whether she was corrupted. Malka said that te priests had run checks that though she had been briefly replaced with a succubus, the Duchess was who she was supposed to be.

She led the party into a reasonably full granary, though several people noted her disappointment, then to an alley pathway. The party passed the Farmer’s Gate to arrive at the Dragonback Inn. On the way a number of city guard were passed, most had one Zentarum in the group. One group of hobgoblins, with two Zentarum, was seen.

The Dragonback Inn had a half dozen customers, including 2 of the watch, and a half-orc bartender. While Amaroth was sent to negotiate, the bartender said out loud, “Well, if ye’ve not gotten back with the misses within a couple of days…” Excellent cover. Eclipse gnaws on bone.
Amaroth and Sedon fetched Fuma and Marcy without incident. Mercy had disguised her copper hair to be black, just in case, but all went by the bartender invisibly.

After a short rest, the party went down stairs visible, and the barkeep waved us over. After some chitchat, he suggested, “harps under the moonlight - costs a coin to see them at Lathander.” Everybody but Sedon seemed to understand he wanted to know whether we had a Harper’s Coin. Sedon outwitted by a half-orc seems hardly likely? Amaroth produced our coin, and the barkeep showed one of his own. They glowed when touched. Barkeep, amused, called himself Beflon and said “not my first watch.”

He also suggested we go to jail, ask for Moraine, who is not one of us. but sympathetic.
