I’m interested in pursuing a straight fighter.

Do we need to know each other n Ravenloft or all be from the same world? I confess that my first inclination is to scratch and old each by playing someone from Taladas.

I haven't decided the type yet, but a spellcaster is likely. I want an excuse to play with a wide range of spells. It's also one reason, I might be a bit death prone: I'd like to try out a few caster types.

Scratch and old?
Taladas?

You are not from Ravenloft. I am tempted to say you are all from the same town in Tarrastra. If you are from different worlds, that scuttles my preferred hook.

Caelesti has said he would like to play a Paladin (he should confirm). I would like to encourage someone to elect a character with healing abilities (e.g., a straight cleric).

"scratch an old itch."

Taladas might be the least known main series setting. It was continent on the opposite side of Krynn from Ansalon.

Whatever you decide. Being from entirely different worlds and becoming trapped in Ravenloft has some nice potential, but it's all your call.

Yeah, I'd be willing to play a Loki trickster cleric.

Now, about those Volo races.

So, bards are surprisingly good healers, especially at the first stage of levels, 1-5. In fact, unless you're playing a cleric of Life, bards are arguably better healers due to their short rest bonus healing for the party.

I think I'm going to create a bard and a cleric, then see which feels right. Right now, the bard seems a better healer with more flexibility at lower levels.

We discussed it verbally since the forum was not working well. We forgot you wanted Tarrastra---we thought it was coming out of the PH. But all that can be changed!

We need to change the Paladins/Cleric's god(s) anyway as not all our PCs are going to be LG.

Caelesti is looking at a Paladin who takes the Oath of the Ancients. They are more like the Flower Children of the 60s. They want to preserve beauty, light, nature... They are not lawful per se.

Caelesti suggested both our Paladin's take the same Oath. But I think that duplicates too many "oath-specific" spells and abilities in the party.

So, if I still do a Paladin, I think I would take the Oath of Devotion. That's the classic Paladin. Good vs Evil. Lawful.

But then I thought two such different Paladins might argue too much (one being very, very lawful, and one not). LOL
In fact, having a super lawful, straight-laced GvsE PC in the party might be annoying to all the party...

So then I started thinking about taking Wizard and being a Necromancer, but being a Good Necromancer = who drains the bad energy out of evil creatures in order to transform that energy into something good. She would introduce herself as a professional "Transformer." She would likely be NG.

Or, if we still want 3 PCs with the same god. Perhaps I should "roll up" a Cleric. Then all 3 of us can select a Tarrastra NG or CG god.

I welcome ideas on this!

The trouble with a "good necromancer" wizard is that the class doesn't really handle it. Almost all the abilities granted in the PH are to empower undead. Rather it looks like you're describing a cleric.

Mercy, we can't follow Torm. We need to pick from the Tarrastra list of dieties. Also our individual alignments should match with our dieties. So, perhaps we 3 should talk alignments?

Okay, here is what I have so far (subject, of course, to DM approval - including the geography - I'll modify if there is no such place). Still needs personality traits, ideals, etc.

Calder ("call-DER") Half Elf male sorcerer (Dragon Bloodline - Brass Dragon - Fire). CG (Belenus)
Background: Guild Artisan - Potters and Tile-Makers Guild

27 point build: Half Elf adds +2 to CHA and +1 to two others
STR 10
DEX 12
CON 13 + 1 = 14
INT 12
WIS 13 + 1 = 14
CHA 14 + 2 = 16

Skills (2 Sorcerer, 2 Background, 2 Half Elf)
Arcana (INT)
Deception (CHA)
Insight (WIS)
Persuasion (CHA)
Intimidation (CHA)
Perception (WIS)

Languages: Common, Elven, Dwarish, Draconic

History:
Calder is a Half Elf male with light brown hair and brown eyes. In the right light, such as during sunset, or from a camp or kiln fire, his hair and eyes can seem to have a metallic glint. He is from an arid town near the edge of a desert known for its tile and pottery making - especially for its use of an interesting array of reds and browns. From even a young age Calder was adept with the kiln, and also showed skill in business negotiations, and thus was made a member of the Pottery and Tile-makers Guild. The members and apprentices of this guild occasionally travel into the desert hills to retrieve the unique minerals used give their products their distinctive hues. There is one cave some days travel into the desert known as "Mother's Cave". Legend has it that long ago this was the lair of an adult brass dragon. But it's clear that the cave has been vacant for generations, and any treasure that it once held is long gone. Some believe that the dragon was slain, others that it just moved on to find a bigger lair far away, but nothing is certain.

Currently:
Calder travelled to the city with a number of his guild members from his town to trade some reds for indigos with their brother guild in the city. The trade being successful, the members of the delegation is now enjoying a few days in the city before heading back.

Interesting - I thought I posted a follow up post, but it disappeared.

I'm thinking of "knowing" the following spells:

Cantrips: Fire Bolt, Light, Mage Hand, Message
(Message is nowhere as good as in 3.5 - it's a single whispered message to a single character in range (but need not be in sight), and allows a single reply. On the other hand, cantrips are "at will".

First level: Magic missile, Sleep

Since Calder is of a Brass Dragon bloodline, and those creature have two breath weapons - fire and sleep - I figured I'd key off of that for some spells. The class, however, only gives bonuses for Fire upon reaching the appropriate level - which is reasonable.

I can post Kili as well

Cleric of life. Dian Cécht.
Str 10, Dex 12, Con 8+2, Int 13, Wis 15+1, Chr 14

History, Insight, Medicine, Persuasion

Hill Dwarf, which means short and slow.
Guild member. Thinks of himself as a famous trap inventor. What do you mean you’ve never heard of him?

P.S. I came home early this evening and went to try to start my car (for the first time in a month; I've been driving Katie's Prius, since she is in Kuwait) to make sure I could drive it to be inspected tomorrow - and the battery was dead.

AAA comes out, jumps the car, says the battery is charging, says I should leave it on for an hour.
I drive to Waltham, just for yucks, and got a flat tire on 128 as I approached Rt. 20.
I wreck my tire and park in Waltham. I cannot find the jack point. I call AAA and leave my car idling.
AAA come out, I turn off the car, they change my tire - and the battery is dead.
The cable on the AAA truck is broken. I call AAA again.
AAA comes out, jumps the car, says the battery is charging - and does not have the correct replacement battery.
I drive to my dealership and drop off the car.
I take Mass Transit home and arrive a little before 10:30.

So much for my plans to review all your characters tonight. It's bedtime.

Sorry! Tomorrow.

Though, if bad luck comes in 3s (as is the superstition) I think your 3 is over and you are ready for your Good Luck run of 3s now!!

That's nice. You didn't answer my question, however.

Apparently it comes from WotC's online supplement: Elemental Evil Player's Companion, which was released to go along with the Elemental Evil campaign/adventure book.

Deelo follows Ohgma. He's CG but it's a soft G with some neutral tendencies.

I also think I'm going to run her as a she since I haven't done that in a long time. Not since my Priestess of Shar.
