Notes from 09/10/20 - Walking into the Trap

The party went to the Sullen Mule, then cantered south with Eclipse in eagle form. After 2hrs we reached an area where the road was clear of snow and ice. We passed a couple of villages. About midday we spotted a hawk trailing us. It followed for the remainder of the day. As nightfall approached, a pillar of smoke was visible a few miles ahead. We still intended to stop at the second relay

We came to an area that looked like a skirmish might have happened. I found the prints of horse activity and armored riders. The reading seemed to say a skirmish occurred an hour or two ago. Sedon and Amaroth found a scrap of cloth – a ripped tunic of House Hothemer. I didn’t sense any enemies within range.

Owl Eclipse flew ahead to the next town, snacking on the way. Her quick look revealed a bonfire with armored knights with horses tethered in street. She was able to see they were templars of Helm (LN god of watchfulness.) Bodies were being burned, humans included. Maybe ten houses in the town. Meanwhile I was reading the trail departing the skirmish. There were prints for a dozen horses - 6 Helmites, the Hothemer person, and… our 5 horses?

Fuma and I went to the edge of town, with Fuma shadowstepping in. He found the Helmites somber, stoic, and not very talkative. 3 slenderer, 3 human? Eclipse found two more guarding horses, including the five intended for our exchange. Fuma discovers four more knights snoring plus a man and a woman wearing fine Hothemer clothing in one of the buildings.

Fuma also found dried blood outside the ?meeting house?. The front door had been bashed in. Blood inside, but no one there. We presumed a battle here several days earlier – and that the Helmites were burning the townsfolk killed in the battle. Fuma and I returned to get the rest of the party.

We cautiously approached the Templars. Fuma talked to them but wasn’t doing all that well. Amaroth took over and his skills brought then to helpful. We showed the Templar leader our papers, that we may have horses. He agreed but told us there was nothing to the south. He said the Templars were raising villagers to fight, had in particular. They will allow us to pass. We were warned to look for neither solace nor aid further south. We were guarded while we rested for the night. They even made breakfast.

As we left town, Eclipse was still in owlform. She saw the hawk again while hunting for breakfast. She noticed that its eyes flashed fire –so a fiendish hawk. She switched to wolf. The party headed further south, riding thru abandoned villages, even seeing some movement inside buildings, but with no outside activity.

A little past noon, the party came upon a spot where the road was blocked - littered with rocks and boulders. Eagle tries to intimidate hawk, and the hawk simply flew away, to the south. The party didn’t think anything of this, in fact didn’t think at all. It continued to walk south, to the blockage, walking directly into the trap.

With a forest on one side, and a ravine on other. A man with an old beard emerged on the ravine side. He was accompanied by two more individuals. On the forest on this side, 3 white abashai showed themselves and announced that they were the children of the white we’d defeated earlier.

We are still about a hour or two from bridge.
